MMA has become a huge betting sport here in Canada. The big fights with transcendent stars such as Conor McGregor or Georges St-Pierre have a ton of build up, which allows everyone to become emotionally invested and form their own opinion, which leads to the desire to place a bet. I’ve personally seen it. A fight with one of these big names that gets a lot of main stream media attention can garner as much betting action as a huge event like the Grey Cup here in Canada. And in the MMA world big fights seem to happen every few months, so it’s easy to see how MMA betting has become so big so fast.
I wouldn’t be surprised if it was one of these big fights getting hyped up in the media that brought you to this page in the first place, and if you fall into that boat you’re in the right place. On this page I will give you all of the info you need to start betting on MMA online. I’ve outlined the 3 best sportsbooks for Canadians, outlined the typical MMA wagers and included a simple 3 step guide that you can follow to place your first bet at an online sportsbook.

Popular MMA Betting Options
The most popular type of MMA bet is simply which fighter is going to come out with the win. I will go over that straight up winner bet below, but I will also include some other bets you can make on MMA fights such as over/under on rounds, and inside the distance props.
Money Line (To Win)
The most basic and by far the most popular type of MMA bet is simply a bet on which competitor wins the fight. Both fighters will be given odds corresponding with the oddsmakers thoughts on each fighters chances to win the fight. Here’s an example using the UFC fight between GSP and Bisping:
- GSP 1.72
- Bisping 2.10
In this example, St Pierre is a slight favourite over Michael Bisping. You can see this because the odds for a GSP win payout less than that of a Bisping win.
In the example above GSP has odds of 1.72 to win the fight, which means a $100 bet on GSP would win $72 if he got the W. On the flip side a $100 bet on Bisping would win $110. Check out our sports betting odds page if you have trouble understanding the odds.
If the fight ends in a draw your bet would be refunded. **Unless a draw is one of the betting options. In the example above, it is not.
Over/Under (Total Rounds)
The vast majority of MMA bets are wagered on a fighter to win, but there are several prop bets you can make as well. One of the more popular props is an over/under of the total rounds in the fight. This is usually set at 2.5 rounds in a 3 round fight and 4.5 rounds in a 5 round fight, and you can bet on whether the fight will end prior to the over/under total, or last longer. If the fight has a good chance of an early finish then you may see the round totals change to 1.5 in a 3 round fight, and they can be set anywhere from 1.5 to 4.5 in a 5 round fight.
Continuing with the example above, here’s a look at the rounds over/under for the GSP vs Bisping fight:
- Over 4.5 rounds (1.72)
- Under 4.5 rounds (2.10)
Neither GSP or Bisping are really thought of as finishers, so the total for their title fight is set at 4.5 rounds, and the oddsmaker has set odds of 1.72 that it goes over that total, which means the perception is that this fight has a good chance of going to a decision.
If this fight ends anytime before 2 minutes and 30 seconds into round 5, then a bet on the under would win, while if it goes to a decision or there is a late finish with less than 2 minutes and 30 seconds remaining in the fight then the over would win.
Method Of Victory (Inside The Distance)
You can also wager on how a fight will end. Here’s the example from the GSP vs Bisping fight. I’ve taken these odds from Bet365.
- GSP Inside Distance 3.25
- GSP by Decision 2.75
- Bisping Inside Distance 4.00
- Bisping by Decision 4.00
- Draw 67.00
The inside the distance bet on GSP would win if he beat Bisping by KO, TKO, submission or disqualification. Basically, if GSP wins the fight in any way other than a decision then his inside the distance prop would pay out.
As you can see the most likely outcome in this case is GSP by Decision at odds of just 2.75.
You can also dive deeper into the method of victory props by wagering on exactly how a fighter will win inside the distance. There are often odds on whether a fighter wins by KO/TKO or submission as well.
Pro Tip: I personally like betting the method of victory the most in MMA fights. If you really break down a fighters path to victory you can get a much better return betting the method of victory props than a straight up win.

Types of UFC Bets
As a one versus one sport, the total number of markets available on the UFC is not quite as robust as it is on team sports such as the National Football League and National Hockey League. However, every fight offers enough betting options to make betting on the UFC fun, and potentially profitable.
Fight Winner
The top bet on the UFC is what fighter will win the fight. Odds on who will win the fight range from very close fights (+100 to -125 range on both fighters) to much crazier odds with the underdog opening at +500 to +750 and the favourite offering little to no value, with odds between -700 to -1000.
You can also bet on whether the fight will end in a tie. Ties are very rare in the UFC, meaning they are a very risky bet to make. Odds on ties are often around +5000 and betting them is generally viewed as a foolish wager.
Total Rounds
Total rounds fit two types of bets. An over/under bet on how long the fight will last and a prop type bet on when the fight will end/will it go the distance. The over/under on total rounds is generally 2.5 on normal fights and 4.5 rounds on championship bouts. The odds on these fights are influenced by the style and weight of the fighters. The odds range a bit, depending on the style and size of the fighters.
The round the fight ends offers better odds than the over/under but is more difficult to predict, as there are four bets in normal fights and six betting options when there is a championship on the line.
Method of Victory
How a fight ends is a popular type of bet available on the UFC. There are typically three options on these wagers – win by KO/TKO/DQ, win by submission, or win by decision. These wagers also require you to bet on a fighter too, meaning there are seven bets of this type available on UFC fights.
Winner, Round and Method of Victory
The bet that offers the most juice on the UFC is a combination wager on who will win when they will win, and/or how they will win. The most common one is a bet on who will win and what round he will win in. Odds on these often start at +200 to +300 and can exceed +2500 on the more risky bets.
UFC Futures
UFC futures are a bit of a loose term as it pertains to a select few bets available on the UFC. When we say futures, we are not talking about what fighter will win an upcoming bout. We are more talking about specials such as whether a fight will take place or who someone will fight next. These bets are not overly popular, but they are fun.
UFC Betting Tips
Below are some MMA betting tips, to help you make smarter bets on the UFC and any other MMA events. Much of it has to do with the research you do before the fight, so we recommend checking out our free picks or checking out as many UFC stats you can find yourself before you bet.
How Fighters Win Fights
Looking at how fighters win and lose fights is arguably the most important bit of information to consider when betting on MMA and the UFC. How fighters win tells you a lot about an upcoming fight. It can help you bet the method of victory, help you determine whether a fight will be quick or go to decision, and can help you pick what fighter will win.
Watch Out for Late Changes
Sometimes a fighter needs to withdraw from the fight at the last minute. These last-minute changes are unpredictable. You may want to rethink your wager, especially if the replacement fighter is a large contrast in style compared to the fighter they replaced.
Riding the Hot Hand
Best Mma Betting Sites Canada Free
You will want to look at the fight history of the fighters before making a bet. Sometimes the better fighter is not the bigger name. You may see a former UFC champion and want to bet on him not realizing he has lost three of his last five fights. While the other guy in the fight is riding a seven-fight win streak and coming off his second Fight of the Night performance in a row.
Biggest UFC / MMA Events to bet on
Best Mma Betting Sites Canada
Firstly, it’s important to understand that UFC and MMA technically are the same entity and follow the same rules. UFC, or Ultimate Fighting Championship, is merely a division of MMA – Mixed Martial Arts. We’ve seen this in other disciplines such as wrestling and boxing where there are various governing bodies involved so anyone who has followed combat sports will already be very familiar with this type of formula.
UFC is based in Las Vegas and has so far promoted over 550 major events. UFC 1 was the inaugural competition and this was held in Denver, Colorado, way back in 1993. Multiple editions are held each year and for the fighters involved, the UFC is the pinnacle of the sport and it provides the titles that they really want to win.
Behind the UFC events, Bellator is regarded as the second biggest MMA event in the world. The first Bellator was held in 2009 and since then, there have been over 200 numbered events leading up to 2020.
Like its UFC counterpart, Bellator provides multiple events every year and in a single year, there are around 22 editions. While there are minor MMA events held across the world throughout each calendar year, UFC and Bellator dominate the schedules and the majority of betting markets will be tied to each numbered edition.
MMA Betting Rules and Tips for Canadians
All Canadian players must adhere to the strict rules that apply to gambling within the country. These are listed in full under the legal section of this preview but beyond those nationwide regulations, each individual bookmaker will have their own rules in regards to certain requirements.
Minimum and maximum stakes will be applied and these will vary depending on which outlet is being used. Maximum profits may also apply in certain cases so if you are a high roller playing with big stakes, this aspect must be kept in mind.
Customers should also look for an operator that provides a wide set of payment options. Visa and Mastercard should be offered automatically and the use of wire transfers for funding is also important. Beyond those obvious choices, eWallets such as PayPal and the Canadian-specific providers would be helpful to attract new account holders.
Lastly, look for a site that combines competitive odds with a good set of betting markets for MMA. You can check odds comparison sites for regular value but we can now recommend some of the best operators for betting on MMA and UFC events in Canada.
